Learn Mhele

What is Mhele?

Mhele is a traditional Botswana strategy board game for two players. Players place and move pieces on connected points, form lines of three called mills, and capture opposing pieces. TswanaPlay provides an online version that follows the rules described in this guide.

A game of position

Simple actions create difficult choices.

Each player begins with 12 pieces. The opening phase is about choosing empty intersections and building useful formations. After all pieces are placed, players move along the board's connecting lines.

A line of three pieces forms a mill and earns a capture. That makes every move a balance between creating your own threat, protecting mobility, and interrupting the opponent's plan.

The TswanaPlay board has 24 playable intersections connected by lines. Pieces sit on the intersections, not inside the spaces.

The shape of a match

01

Place

Take turns putting one piece on an empty point until both players have placed all 12 pieces.

02

Move

Slide one piece at a time along a connected line to an adjacent empty point.

03

Fly

When a player has only three pieces left, those pieces may move to any empty point.

Culture carried through play

Traditional games can connect people through shared rules, conversation, memory, and competition. Bringing Mhele to the web gives people another way to encounter and practise the game; it does not replace playing together on a physical board.

TswanaPlay treats the digital game as an invitation to learn, play, and continue sharing knowledge between players and generations.
